Great article :) I have trained both in the dominance based training and positive and have to say positive training is the way to go. Years ago I read a book by Raymond Coppinger which opened my eyes to dogs. In one part he has to be a dog is not to be a wolf. He also explained how dogs are scavengers and studied village dogs. I think Raymond may have been a voyager in the study of the domestic dog. There are still some trainers out there with a huge following who teach unhealthy training which is sad.

This is a superb article, and should be compulsary reading for all dog owners. We have a gorgeous, loving German Shepherd of 14 months who does need some work to control her chase habits, and her under socialisation (we got her at 5 months) and by chance I found Davids article on how to stop it.

That article, combined with this one describes exactly how she behaves, and debunks the romantic anthropomorphism myth of being a pack member seeking dominance etc.... How true is the notion of memes - the whole are of "public" scientific reporting seems to be predicated on convenient and easy fiction.

The notion that our dog seeks power/dominance is absurd to anyone who knows her. She is a very shy/nervous dog who seeks love, security, affection and loves to explore and play games. She needs to "belong" to a group and needs excitement in her life as we all do - there is no need to anthropomorphise this behaviour at all. Even if it were true! Howard
