This article is so spot on. It is so well argued. Thank you. It seems quite logical that inflicting pain does not work. Because I have a background in music I have argued that if a conductor yells at musicians there is no teaching message. Musicians will not be able to change their behavior/performance in a way that earns them praise because they have no idea what they need to do. It is the same in dog training. Also, as the author points out: you really do not know what the dog will associate the pain with. Just as a jerk on the leash could just as well mean: pull harder or in a different direction.
In any case: this is a great and well written article and I highly recommend it.
I also support the ban of shock collars.

Good sentiments, very well put. I just wish all dog owners would think about the way they communicate
with their dogs in the same way.

The arguments against the use of the shock collar are often dismissed by working and sporting enthusiasts as being the views of soft people with soft dogs. I am not soft and neither is my dog however I can't think of a more abusive way of treating a living creature in my care. As a fellow police dog handler it warms my cockles to see articles such as this being produced by people who clearly have knowledge and practical abilities. I feel the appeal of shock collars lies in it's alleged simplicity of use which appeals to peoples lazy, ill educated approach to dog ownership."It is impossible to beat an ignorant man in argument" - William G. Macadoo, and so I guess education is the answer.

How wonderfully well put!! I also train dogs for a living and feel it is simply not how I would treat my human best friends sowhy would I treat my dogs like that? Hopefully if we disagree with a fellow human wedo not as a matter of recourse repeatedly punch that human. If you do maybe thereare other underlying issues that need to be dealt with and possibly you should not be a dog owner. Violence begets violence!! Simple as!!
